Hide Window Fast

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

  • How to show the Setup (main program window)?
If Hide Window Fast is already running, you can pres your hotkey for setup. That is Shift+F11 by default. You can also show Setup by launching Hide Window Fast again. (The first instance of Setup will be activated)

  • How to define, which windows to hide, and which not?
Go to Setup - Hiding Options (How to show setup) and edit the "Titles or classnames of windows to hide" box. On every row you can have part of title or classname of one program, that will be hidden if you press hotkey for hiding windows.
You can add window titles and classnames from the list of all programs which is on the same form.

ClassName is an internal name of every window on your desktop. You will have to use the classname instead of title in the case, that the title of application that you want to hide has no stable part of its name. For example Windows Explorer (My Computer) sets the title of its window to actual folder name.

Example: This box contains three lines by default: "Internet Explorer", "Media Player" and "CabinetWClass". Let's assume, that you have these windows on your desktop: "Yahoo - Microsoft Internet Explorer", "Work.doc - Microsoft Word", "My Computer" and "My Documents". By pressing the key for hiding windows, the Internet Explorer window will disappear (because in contains "Internet Explorer"), and "My Computer" and "My Documents" windows will be hidden as well, because their classname is "CabinetWClass".

This box is not case-sensitive, so it is the same if you enter "Internet" or "internet" or "INterNET"

  • How to define my own hotkeys?
Go to Setup - Hotkeys (How to show setup) and look at the "HotKey definitions" box. You can redefine any of these 3 hotkeys by clicking at the edit box and pressing a new hotkey combination.

    Default hotkeys are:
    • F11 for hiding windows
    • Ctrl + F11 for showing windows
    • Shift + F11 for Showing Setup (the main program window)

Note: It is a good idea to have the key for hiding windows defined as a single key (without Ctrl, Shift, Alt), because it is faster to press. You can also define key for hiding windows same as key for showing windows. E.g. both F11.
You can use up to four-key combinations such as Ctrl + Shift + Alt + W

  • How to mute the sound?
If you check the "Mute all sounds when hiding windows" box in Setup - Main Options (How to show setup), pressing the hotkey for hiding windows will also mute all sounds on your computer. After pressing the hotkey for showing windows, the sound will be unmuted again.
There are two methods if muting the sound: one use s the "Mute all" on your Volume Control and the other sets volume to zero. The difference is, that that using the second method there will be no indication of muted sound visible in the traybar (Right-Bottom corner of your screen).

  • How to clear Recent Documents, Internet Explorer history etc.?
First go to Setup - Cleanup options (How to show setup) and simply select the items that you want to clear. By default no items are selected.
After you have selected items to clear, you can clear your history by pressing the "Run Cleanup Now" button, or you can set up, when the history should be cleared. The options are:
    • Run Cleanup on system startup - To clear history whenever Hide Window Fast starts
    • Run Cleanup on system shutdown (or your logout) - To clear history when you are logging off, or when Windows is going to reboot or halt.
    • Run Cleanup when hiding windows - To clear history every time when you press the key for hiding windows
    • Run Cleanup every x minutes - To clear history in regular intervals of x minutes
If you want to use one of these options, you will need Hide Window Fast to be running (either visible or hidden). It is recommended to let Hide Window Fast run every time you start windows. (This is enabled by default)

  • How to use Advanced cleanup options?
In Advanced cleanup options you will find a list of all plugins for cleaning history installed on your computer. You can use this menu in the same way as Cleanup options. Items selected in Advanced cleanup options will be cleared at the same time as items in Cleanup options.

If you are missing a plugin for your application in the "Custom cleanup plugins" list, you can either press the "Download new plugins" button to look for the plugin on our web, or you can create the plugin yourself.

  • How to create custom plugin in Advanced cleanup options?
First you have to know, which files, directories, or Registry items do you need to clean. You must know exactly, which items do you want to erase, because deleting certain files or registry items can cause a data loss.

Now you have to check the "Enable expert settings" and add a new plugin.

    • Inserting the registry entries to delete
You can enter more than one entry in this edit box. In such case you can separate the registry entries with a semicolon (;). You can also press the "..." button to open Path editor, where you can separate the entries with new row. It is not important, whether you enter name of a registry key, or value here.
It is possible to use wildcards such as "*" (asterisk) and "?" (question mark)

Example: (Description of how plugin for ACDSee is made) We want to delete values "Item1", "Item2" ... "Item15" from key "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\ACD Systems\ACDSee32\". We will use the asterisk wildcard : "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\ACD Systems\ACDSee32\Item*"

    • Inserting the files and directories entries to delete
The same rules as in Inserting registry entries apply. You can also use wildcards.

If you are going to distribute your plugin, you should use these system specific constants:
      ConstantMeaning
      %WinDir%Windows directory (usually C:\Windows)
      %AppData%Application Data (usually C:\Windows\Application Data)
      %ProgFiles%Program Files (usually C:\Program Files)
%UserName%Name of current user (eg. Bill)

Example: You want to delete "C:\Program Files\DAP\Temp\*.*" and "C:\Program Files\DAP\download.log".
You should enter the following: "%ProgFiles%\DAP\Temp\*.*; %ProgFiles%\DAP\download.log"

  • How to run Hide Window Fast every time I start Windows?
Check the "Run at system startup" option in Setup - Main Options (How to show setup). Hide Window Fast will start up in hidden mode automatically. If you want to show the Setup then, press the hotkey for showing Setup (Shift + F11 by default).

  • How to remove Hide Window Fast from the list of running applications?
If you want to remove HWF from the Applications list which is accessible by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del, you can check "Hide from Task List" in Main options. You can use this option only on Windows 95, 98 and Me.
